A notebook computer (also known as a laptop or laptop computer) is a portable computer that has a screen and an alphanumeric keyboard. The clamshell design of laptops is typically a clamshell with the screen on the inner side of the lid and the keyboard inside the lower lid. However, 2-in-1 computers with detachable keyboards are often called laptops or “laptop mode“. Laptops can be folded down for transport and are therefore suitable for mobile usage. Because they can be placed on the lap of a person when in use, they are named so. Laptops are widely used today in many settings.
In USA English, the terms laptop machine and computer can be interchangeable. However, it may be preferable to use one in another dialect of English. The notebook computers and notebooks initially referred to a particular size of a laptop, which was smaller than the mainstream laptops at the time. However, the terms now refer to the same thing. notebook no more refers to any specific size.

There are specialized models for laptops that can be used in military or construction applications. Also, there are low-production laptops like those made by the One Laptop per Child organization. These laptops have features such as solar charging and semi-flexible parts that are not available on other laptops. The first portable computers were intended for niche markets. They were used mainly for specialized field applications such as the military or for traveling sales reps. They were widely used in a wide variety of applications as portable computers evolved into laptops.
